HOW FARMERS & RANCHERS CAN PREPARE FOR GFI 263

WHAT IS GFI 263?

As of June 11, 2023, the Food and Drug Administration is implementing guidance for industry #263, also known as GFI 263. This regulation will prevent the purchase of all previously over-the-counter antibiotics, or injectables, like penicillin and oxytetracycline. Farmers and ranchers will now be required to have a prescription from a licensed veterinarian to purchase and administer antibiotics in their herd.

PRODUCER SUCCESS WITH NATURAL PRODUCTS

One spring I lost nearly 50 calves. When I added it all up, I estimated that the antibiotics and death loss cost me nearly $10,000. I knew something had to change. The next year, after using Ralco products, I only lost 2-3 calves. My scour rate went from 20% to 2% within just a couple of days.

This was the first time in 20 years that I’ve had no issues weaning calves after using Ralco products.

In a normal situation, after bringing calves in for weaning, at about day 10 I would have to put antibiotics in their feed, CTCs, before the VFD regulation. After using Ralco, I have no need for CTCs and my percentage of doctored calves was roughly 10% less.

We actually need to be reminded about how bad things were before. It wasn’t rare to see the vet two or three times a week at our dairy farm. Now, we just see him for herd check every two weeks. If you like seeing your veterinarian that often, you shouldn’t use Ralco.

All you ever hear from dairy farmers is their tank average. But if you treat 5 cows on average, you can easily lose 100,000 pounds of milk in a year. That translates to over $20,000 per year at today’s prices. After using Ralco, my veterinarian asked what had changed in my ration, because he wanted to share it with his other clients. The very next day, the hoof trimmer was having trouble finding feet to wrap and asked me, “What in the world are you feeding these cows?”
