3 Tips for Getting Cows to Cycle with Lower Body Condition Scores

March 9, 2022 | Beef

Ensuring a successful calf crop year after year requires careful attention to your cows’ body condition scores (BCS) and reproductive cycles. To maintain profitability, cows should cycle 40-60 days postpartum and rebreed by days 80-85.

Proper preparation begins well before the breeding season and includes evaluating your herd’s body condition, optimizing nutrition, and using proven strategies to kickstart estrus in under-conditioned cows.

Starting at weaning, evaluate your herd’s body condition and optimize the energy content of forages to ensure your cows are in peak condition.

Taking these proactive steps will set your herd up for improved body condition scores, better breeding success and a more profitable calving season.

3 Methods to Jumpstart Estrus in Low Body Condition Cows

When cows have a low body condition score, getting them to cycle can be challenging. In emergencies, these three strategies can help.

1. 48-hour Calf Removal

Temporarily separating a cow from her calf for 48 hours can stimulate her estrus cycle, improving breeding success and pregnancy rates.

According to the University of Nevada, removing the nursing stimulus triggers hormonal changes that encourage cycling. This method can also help synchronize cycles in cows with higher BCS, increasing the likelihood of successful breeding.

Key Considerations:

  • This strategy can stress calves, as they may not eat during separation.

  • Ensure proper fencing and facilities to care for calves during this period.

While stressful, this technique can significantly boost fertility, making it a valuable tool for forward-thinking cattle producers.

2. Early Weaning Calves

For cows with a BCS of 4 or lower, early weaning redirects nutrients from lactation to the cow’s recovery, helping her regain weight and cycle earlier in the breeding season.

Studies from North Dakota State University show that early weaning improves pregnancy rates and allows cows to rebreed sooner.

However, this strategy requires careful attention to calf health and nutrition. Newly weaned calves need close supervision and incur higher feed costs during the backgrounding phase.

3. Boost and Maintain Cow Body Condition with Bypass Protein Supplementation

Using bypass protein supplementation is another effective way to improve body condition. Crude protein has two components:

  1. Rumen-Degradable Protein (RDP): Supports rumen microbes to break down forage and extract nutrients, which boosts energy intake.

  2. Rumen-Undegradable Protein (RUP): Bypasses the rumen and provides protein directly to the animal, aiding in body condition improvement without increasing milk production.

Research shows that pregnant cows supplemented with RUP experienced reduced weight loss and maintained their BCS during calving, leading to faster rebreeding.

Important Note: Excess protein can cause weight loss if not properly formulated. Always consult a ruminant nutritionist before adding protein supplements to your herd’s diet.

Prevention Starts with Proper Nutrition

Maintaining healthy BCS and reproductive cycles begins with proactive care:

  1. Evaluate Body Condition at Weaning: Make necessary adjustments to forage and supplementation early.

  2. Use High-Quality Mineral Supplements: Ensure cows receive the nutrients and protein they need for optimal performance and reproductive health.

  3. Monitor Calf Nutrition: If using early weaning or 48-hour separation, provide proper care and nutrition for calves during these transitions.
